Evan Chapman is a freelance percussionist
from Ellicott City, Maryland.
Evan is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Music degree in Classical Percussion Performance from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music in Bloomington, Indiana. He has studied privately with John Tafoya, Kevin Bobo, Michael Spiro, Grant Menefee, Nasar Abadey, Kim Plainfield, Scott Tiemann, John Gleeson, and Robby Burns.
At Indiana University, Evan has performed with the Philharmonic Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, University Orchestra, Afro-Cuban Folkloric Ensemble, Brazilian Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, and Concert Band. He is currently Principal Percussionist of the Chamber Orchestra, and held the Principal Timpanist spot in the University Orchestra and Concert Band. Evan performed as an Artist at the world-renowned Percussive Arts Society International Convention in November 2011.
Evan has attended the Berklee College of Music 5-Week Summer Performance Program, where he held the drum set spot in the 5-Week Big Band, the Berklee Percussion Festival, the University of Maryland College Park 3-Week Jazz Studies Summer Program with Chris Vadala, and the Indiana University Summer Percussion Academy.
In addition to his classical training at the Jacobs School of Music, Evan is also an experienced and sought-after drum set player. He has performed and recorded with artists such as South Jordan (Island Def Jam Records), Oh, The Story!, Minimus The Poet, Man&Dog, Sam Ock, Company Idyll, The Painter & The Canvas, and Emeralds As Eyes, among others. With these artists, Evan has been the supporting act for bands such as Theory Of A Deadman (Roadrunner Records, Island Records), Cursive (Saddle Creek Records), and Portugal. The Man (Atlantic Records).
Evan has done studio session work with well-known producers including Paul Leavitt (All Time Low, Circa Survive, Senses Fail), Jeremy Griffith (Cartel, Saosin, Underoath, Norma Jean), and Justin Chapman (Saosin, Underoath, Norma Jean, Dr. Dog).
Evan founded the percussion program at Young People's Summer Stock, an intensive arts camp for 2nd through 12th grade performers in Owings Mills, Maryland. At Summer Stock, he teaches private drum lessons and group percussion classes geared towards young beginners. He teaches alongside acclaimed professionals Tony Tsendeas, Prince Hairston, Honey Rockwell, and WaaakOne.
Evan's YouTube channel, which features over 100 videos of percussion arrangements, live performances, in-studio work, and drum set transcriptions, has garnered the attention and praise of famous artists including Peter Erskine, Explosions In The Sky (Temporary Residence), Skrillex (Atlantic Records, Sony BMG), Underoath (Solid State Records), The Locust (ANTI-Records), Local Natives (Frenchkiss Records), So Many Dynamos (Vagrant Records), The Reign Of Kindo (Candyrat Records), and Maps & Atlases. His videos have over 400,000 views.
Evan has performed for many musical theater productions in the Baltimore area by companies including the Columbia Center For Theatrical Arts, Silhouette Stages, and the You Can Always Come Home Players. He was a member of the Cappies Gala orchestra at the Hippodrome Theater for three years.
While not attending school, Evan teaches privately in the Baltimore/Washington area.
